SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR VOLUME 1 NUMBER 1
NEW INFORMATION FOR "NORTH OF THE BORDER SHO" A member correctly pointed out that I put part of Michigan into Wisconsin at the beginning of the article. The area where the three great lakes come together is part of the great state of Michigan, and I understand they don't want to give it to Wisconsin, even if it LOOKS like it should belong to that state. Not wanting to start any border wars between SHO owners in either of those two great states, I humbly apologize for any geographical problems caused by my momentary lack of understanding of the true state lines in that area. Don Mallinson, Editor This came in from member Kelley Bennett: In your article entitled "Rust and the SHO" you mention a product called
POR-15. You state that POR-15 is available from Eastwood company. From visiting their
website, I wasn't able to find POR-15 products. Eastwood sells a rust stabilizer called
"Corroless" rust stabilizer. However, this Kelly, I am glad to be able to pass along your information. You are right that Eastwood does not sell POR 15. I have tried the "Corroless" and while it was good, I don't think it is as good as POR 15. I recommend that members buy their POR 15 products from Kelley or search out the product in old car magazines and "Old Cars Price Guide" where POR 15 always runs an ad. Editor. Additional information for the "V8 Chronicles" BABY CARE (Editors Note: This is the conclusion to the article that we didn't have room for in the magazine) UPDATE: I got the analysis back from "Oil Analyzers Inc." for the power steering fluid. Power steering fluid should be about 20w, mine was 60w, because it was 36.7 % oxidized, (turned to carbon slush). Doug did not remove a hose to get all the old stuff out, he just sucked out what he could and replaced it with new Mercon ATF. A complete replacement would extend the change interval but is a lot more trouble. For me, Ill change the fluid every 15,000 miles or once a year, but one could go longer if they completely replaced the old fluid, say to every 2 years. Given the cost of a new PS pump, I dont care what FOMOCO recommends; compared to a new pump a couple quarts of quality ATF is cheap! I called Vadim at the SHO Shop and we talked about the leaking seal at the UDP. I have been the only one to report a leak. I also sent back the bypass pipe with the pinhole leak for a refund. Vadim stands by his products. I stopped by Anderson Ford in Clinton IL, to show them the bad pump shaft. They paid for the shaft, $48, and for half the labor, and handed me 6 quarts of Mercon V AFT which will in time end up in my transmission or power steering. They also will replace my torn outer CV boot for free. I did not ask for reimbursement for the mis-aligned sub-frame since Doug did not charge me. Happy Motoring!
